Slade House by David Mitchell

Deliciously spooky, Slade House is perfect reading as the season creeps toward Halloween. It is, as Anthony Doerr put it, "a Hansel and Gretel for grown-ups". Every nine years, someone special is lured inside, but there is only a solid brick wall where the entrance supposedly was.
